Capcom has moved the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword up three weeks, from September 25 to September 4. The swordplay action game launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. Capcom has not given a reason for the earlier date.
The game follows a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet. The mystical artifact grants its bearer the power to slay Genma, demonic beings drawn from the underworld. The story unfolds across Edo-era Kyoto, a city warped by clouds of malevolent energy known as Malice. The protagonist fights through blood-soaked battles while searching for his reason to fight, with every stage cloaked in mystery and danger.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword release date and platforms
The earlier Onimusha: Way of the Sword release date applies across every confirmed platform. No version arrives later than the rest. Capcom describes the combat as “bloodbaths of intense swordplay action” set against a Kyoto “twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice.” A demo is already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Switch 2 owners do not yet have a playable sample ahead of launch.

The Onimusha series’ history
The Onimusha franchise debuted in 2001. That first game told the story of a young warrior fighting through a period of widespread war in feudal Japan. After gaining the power of the Oni, he becomes an Onimusha and turns that strength against the invading Genma. The series built its identity around the “Issen” critical counter mechanic, a timing-based parry that turns a single well-placed strike into a finishing blow.
Onimusha blends people and events inspired by real Japanese history with a dark fantasy setting. That mix carried the franchise through several sequels and spinoffs after its debut. The combination of grounded historical detail and supernatural threat gave the series a tone distinct from other action games of its era. That same tone carries into Way of the Sword’s version of Kyoto.
To date, the series has sold more than 8.7 million units worldwide. It has also inspired an original Netflix animation adaptation that reached viewers outside the games themselves. The new game is the franchise’s next mainline entry. With the September 4 date now confirmed, it arrives three weeks ahead of the schedule Capcom first announced.
Players who want a preview before launch can already try the demo on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Capcom has not said whether a Switch 2 demo is coming. For now, that platform’s early look stays tied to the Onimusha: Way of the Sword release date itself, which arrives September 4 on every confirmed platform.
