Star Wars: Galactic Racer is out now on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it arrives with a Metascore of 88. That puts Star Wars: Galactic Racer ahead of every Star Wars game released since Knights of the Old Republic in 2003.
The racer is the first release from developer Fuse Games. Its score also places it above recent entries such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Zero Company. On PS5, the game costs $59.99.
How critics scored Star Wars: Galactic Racer
Reviews from major outlets have been strongly positive. Push Square gave the game a 9/10, calling the handling “excellent” and the presentation “eye-popping.” It also singled out the roguelite campaign. The review concluded that the game is “one that comes highly recommended for arcade racer fans.”
VGC went further with a 5/5. Its reviewer called it “a thrilling throwback to a better time for racing games” and said the game “absolutely nails what it is trying to do.”
Eurogamer also awarded 5/5. The outlet compared the pace to Burnout, writing that the game “has that ceaseless full-ahead pelt that Burnout offers.” It described a mix of modern roguelite choices and older-style “cruel and ingenious courses.”
Meanwhile, GameSpot scored it 9/10. The reviewer admitted surprise at the concept: “I never would have guessed that putting roguelike elements into a racer would create a winning formula.” The same review said “every moment feels joyfully fast.”
Lower scores still land in positive territory
Even the lowest scores among the major sites are favourable. Game Informer gave it 8.5/10 and called it “enthralling, challenging, and hard to put down.” That review also pointed to the volume of content, with courses, vehicle builds and characters to work through.
GamesRadar scored it 4/5. According to its review, Star Wars: Galactic Racer “brings the carnage-filled arcade racing of the 2000s into the modern day.” The outlet described the racing as slick and fast.
Why the 88 Metascore stands out
Knights of the Old Republic released in 2003. In the 23 years since, no Star Wars game had matched its critical reception until now.
The record now belongs to an arcade racer from a new studio. Recent big-budget entries such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor scored lower. As a result, Fuse Games enters the market with a debut that sits above them on Metacritic.
Critics returned to the same point across reviews. They praised the pairing of 2000s-era arcade racing with roguelite progression. Eurogamer, GameSpot and Push Square each named that mix as a reason the game works.
The game is also aimed at a clear audience. Push Square framed its recommendation around arcade racer fans, and GamesRadar compared it to the carnage-filled racers of the 2000s.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer launched on October 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
