Paradox Interactive revealed the name of its next game before its official announcement. “Afterworld” appeared under a forum’s “Unreleased Games” filter setting, two days ahead of the studio’s planned reveal at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25. The leak confirms the Afterworld game is a post-apocalyptic grand strategy title.
The slip was first spotted on Reddit, where users noticed the title listed on Paradox’s own forum software. The studio had spent the past several days teasing an announcement on X. It posted a montage of destruction scenes pulled from its existing catalog, including a collapsing castle from Crusader Kings 3 and an exploding vessel from Stellaris. Fans speculated about the genre in the replies, guessing everything from a fantasy 4X game to a new Stellaris spin-off, before some correctly predicted a grand strategy project.
What we know about the Afterworld game so far
A Discord channel description tied to the leak lays out early details. It reads: “Lead a tribe of survivors, rediscover ancient technology, manage wasteland settlements and wage wars of conquest and political struggle in Afterworld, an original post-apocalyptic survival grand strategy game.”
The description points to wasteland faction conflict, internal power struggles and technology recovery as core systems. That marks a departure from the historical and space settings Paradox built its reputation on through Crusader Kings and Stellaris. Reddit users have already nicknamed it “Civilization: Fallout Edition,” a comparison that lines up with the described mechanics.
Afterworld also surfaces shortly after Paradox canceled its life simulation project Life by You, a planned rival to The Sims that faced repeated delays. Paradox CEO Mattias Lilja said at the time the game was “lacking in some areas.” He added that its path to release had grown “far too long and uncertain.” Resources freed by that cancellation may have helped push Afterworld toward its current stage.
Can Afterworld repair Paradox’s reputation?
The reveal lands as Paradox works to rebuild trust with its player base. In 2024, a Stellaris expansion called The Age Machine drew criticism after its Steam page disclosed that generative AI tools were used in the “ideation of content” and the “creation of some assets.” The disclosure prompted a wave of negative reviews. Crusader Kings 3 has faced similar backlash, with fans accusing Paradox of releasing DLC that changes little about core gameplay while charging full price.
