Bloodborne film adaptation confirmed R-rated and animated

Sony Pictures has confirmed a Bloodborne film adaptation at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas: an R-rated animated feature co-produced by YouTuber JackSepticEye, PlayStation Productions, and Lyrical Animation. Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch made the announcement, saying the film will be “very true” to the spirit of the 2015 FromSoftware game.

The R-rating sets this Bloodborne adaptation apart from many recent video game films, which have generally aimed at broader audience certifications. Bloodborne’s gothic horror setting, body horror imagery, and punishing atmosphere make an adult rating a natural fit for the material. Sony has not announced a director, voice cast, or release date.

Choosing animation rather than live action gives the production flexibility to render Bloodborne’s creature designs and gothic world without the constraints of practical effects. No previous Bloodborne film or series adaptation has existed, making this the first public signal from Sony about long-term plans for the IP.

JackSepticEye and the Bloodborne film adaptation

JackSepticEye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, is an Irish YouTuber with 31.2 million subscribers and 17.5 billion combined views. He has published multiple Bloodborne Let’s Play series on his channel, with his main playthrough accumulating nearly five million views. His content primarily covers gaming and comedy. Lyrical Media co-finances the project alongside Sony, with McLoughlin’s co-producer credit rooted in his documented history with the game.

McLoughlin announced his involvement on Reddit and was direct about his intentions.

“I am going to do everything in my power to make this the BEST Bloodborne adaptation possible. Not only is it my favourite game ever made, but I know how truly passionate the fans of this game are and how much hunger they have for more of it,” he wrote.

He described his role as a “full circle moment.” McLoughlin has no prior film producing credits. His involvement suggests PlayStation Productions sees value in bringing in community figures whose relationship to the source material is both deep and public.

Sony’s growing game-to-screen slate

The Bloodborne film is part of a broader run of PlayStation property adaptations at Sony Pictures. The studio recently confirmed a Helldivers movie with director Justin Lin attached, known for the Fast and Furious franchise. Sony has also wrapped production on a live-action Legend of Zelda film, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda.

Bloodborne, released for PlayStation 4 in 2015 and developed by FromSoftware, has never received a PC port, sequel, or remake despite sustained demand from players who consider it among the best games of its generation. Sony has not addressed those requests in connection with this announcement, and Panitch made no mention of any such plans at CinemaCon. The Bloodborne film adaptation is the first confirmed extension of the property.
