Lanterns episode 2 pulls its two leads apart. The split does more for the HBO series than the pilot’s shared scenes did. Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) sends John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) back to Coast City for a supply run. While the rookie is gone, Hal stumbles onto alien detectors hidden around Rushville, Nebraska. By the end of Lanterns episode 2, the show has introduced the Manhunters, a synthetic army with a genocidal history. It also suggests that Hal’s old enemy Sinestro is not the biggest problem heading John’s way.
The series, created for HBO as a slow-burn take on the Green Lantern Corps, spent its pilot establishing Hal as a burned-out veteran ring-bearer. John is the Marine he is training to replace. Lanterns episode 2 backs away from that dynamic on purpose, giving each character room to operate without the other watching. The choice pays off almost immediately: apart, both men reveal more about what each one wants than they did sharing scenes in the pilot. Chandler plays Hal as someone who would rather fly off than sit still, while Pierre gives John a discipline that keeps surfacing even when the plot pulls him in strange directions.
Hal and John train apart in Rushville
The episode opens with Hal dumping a bucket of water on John to start flight training. John cannot get airborne on command, so he improvises a small bird construct instead, one that keeps flying even after Hal takes the ring back. Rather than praise the trick, Hal sends John to Coast City to retrieve his power battery. He leaves him alone in Rushville with one instruction: keep the bird alive.
With John gone, Hal returns to the Rushville High football field. He notices a row of detectors that do not register as ordinary metal scanners. He follows the trail into town and finds Rushville nearly empty, with residents gathered for a closed town meeting he was not invited to. Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) is not pleased to see him. Her husband, Billy Macon (Jason Ritter), tells Hal that his charges have been dropped and that he is free to go. Hal does not take the hint, and a call from John pulls him away before he causes a scene.
Lanterns episode 2 introduces the Manhunters
While Hal digs around town, John searches Hal’s Coast City mansion for the battery and finds Hal’s old uniform hanging untouched in a closet. He also feeds Earl, revealed to be a carnivorous alien plant that eats raw meat. Leaving the house, John is grabbed off the street by several men and driven to meet Antaan (Paul Ben-Victor), an alien outlaw. Antaan wants John’s help finding a Manhunter hiding somewhere in Rushville.
Antaan lays out the backstory that gives Lanterns episode 2 its title reveal. Before the Green Lantern Corps existed, the Guardians of the Universe built the Manhunters, shapeshifting synthetics meant to police the galaxy. The Manhunters wiped out entire civilizations, including Antaan’s own, and a Green Lantern was later sent to hunt down and execute the one responsible. Antaan’s tech has traced that same Manhunter to Rushville. He gives John 48 hours to locate it, and threatens to destroy half of Nebraska if he fails.
Hal Jordan gets shot confronting William Macon
Back in Rushville, Hal has stolen all four alien bodies from the local morgue. He confirms that the detectors around town are built to track aliens, not metal. Kerry pulls him over before he can confront William Macon (Garret Dillahunt) at his ranch, and insists on doing the talking herself. Hal ignores her, pushes Macon on the detectors and the killings at the football field, and gets shot after Macon orders him off the property. Macon cites an NDA he refuses to break.
Hal wakes up cuffed to a hospital bed with Kerry at his side. She asks about “Sinestro,” a name he said in his sleep. She then rattles off details about the former Green Lantern’s coup and defeat, details that should not be public knowledge on Earth. Hal brushes off the question. Still, the empty sign-out sheet and untouched medical equipment in the hospital hint that Rushville is not what it appears to be. Kerry reminds him that she answers to no one but herself when it comes to protecting the town.
Sinestro tells Hal the real threat is John Stewart
That night, John returns to Rushville and runs into Zoe (Poorna Jagannathan), Macon’s wife, at a local diner. She drives him back to his motel, where Hal is waiting. John tells Hal everything, including Antaan’s deadline. Hal connects the dots: the missing Manhunter likely killed Abin Sur, and that is how Hal ended up with the ring in the first place. Still frustrated that John’s construct outperformed his own instruction, Hal presses him about the bird. John refuses to answer and collapses the construct instead.
Once John is asleep, Hal suits up and flies to a deep-space prison to see Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) in person. Hal asks what Sinestro knows about the Manhunters. Sinestro answers with a question of his own: “If one still existed, it would be the second-greatest threat you’re currently facing. So why don’t you tell me about John Stewart?”
The line reframes the season’s stakes. Sinestro is still locked up and cut off from Earth. Yet he treats John as a bigger unknown than a genocidal alien army loose in Nebraska, and Lanterns episode 2 ends without explaining why. The vanished Manhunter, the alien detectors ringing Rushville, and a hospital that appears to have never treated a patient add up to something bigger. Rushville itself looks built to hide it, and neither Green Lantern has figured out what yet. New episodes of Lanterns air Sundays on HBO.
