Nintendo Switch 2 system update 22.5.0 is now live

Nintendo has pushed Nintendo Switch 2 system update 22.5.0. It’s the first firmware release for both Switch consoles since April 2026. The update brings accessibility language additions to the Switch 2. The original Nintendo Switch also receives changes, including a redesigned Nintendo eShop.

What’s in the Nintendo Switch 2 system update

The Nintendo Switch 2 system update 22.5.0 adds two new language options to accessibility features. Nintendo has extended Dutch and Russian support to the Text to Speech function. The console can now read on-screen text aloud in those languages. Both are now also supported in the “Change Speech to Text During GameChat” option. That feature transcribes spoken audio from voice chat into visible text during gameplay.

The full patch notes for the Switch 2:

  • Added Dutch and Russian to “Text to Speech” languages in Accessibility.
  • Added Dutch and Russian as languages for “Change Speech to Text During GameChat” in Accessibility.
  • General system stability improvements.

If your console doesn’t prompt you to install automatically, you can trigger the update manually through System Settings.

Original Switch update adds eShop redesign and video controls

The original Nintendo Switch moves to version 22.5.0 today, with a longer patch list. The most visible addition is a redesigned Nintendo eShop layout. Users with the Basic Dark theme active in System Settings will see the store’s colors updated to match.

The release adds the User-Verification PIN to two new scenarios. It now applies when accessing the eShop and when approving saved payment methods. Previously, PIN protection covered other account security functions.

Video playback in the eShop and the News section picks up a shortcut. Pressing ZL while watching full-screen video rewinds ten seconds; ZR skips forward ten seconds. Switch didn’t have either control before.

Full patch notes for the original Switch:

  • The Nintendo eShop layout has been redesigned.
  • The eShop color will now reflect the theme color if System Settings is set to “Basic Dark.”
  • User-Verification PIN can now be used when accessing Nintendo eShop and when using saved payment methods.
  • Added the ability to rewind 10 seconds/advance 10 seconds with ZL and ZR when watching full-screen video in News or Nintendo eShop.
  • General system stability improvements.

First update since April

This is the first Nintendo Switch 2 system update Nintendo has released for either console since April 2026. The largest firmware change of the year came in March. Nintendo added Handheld Mode Boost for better undocked performance, plus expanded Game Chat functionality. The Switch 2 launched in June 2025, and Nintendo has shipped updates on a regular cadence since then.

Nintendo Music also updated

Alongside the firmware changes, Nintendo Music received a separate update today. The app adds Free Roam songs from the Mario Kart World soundtrack. That game launched earlier this year.
