Sony Pictures Entertainment reported flat fiscal year 2025 earnings with revenue of $9.92 billion (JPY1.499 trillion). The studio’s biggest hit was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, which grossed $741 million worldwide. Overall theatrical revenue still fell sharply, however, and PlayStation hardware sales also declined year-on-year.
The figures cover the 12 months ended March 31, 2026. Demon Slayer aside, total SPE theatrical revenue fell to $494 million from $900 million the prior year, reflecting a weaker overall slate. Sony’s total sales to entertainment streaming platforms dropped 10% to $1.14 billion.
Crunchyroll growth and TV revenue soften the blow
Television production revenue climbed 12% to $3.39 billion for the year. Sony’s media networks division, which includes anime streamer Crunchyroll, grew 13% to $3.17 billion. Those gains came even as SPE’s subscriber count fell from 627.3 million to 531.7 million year-on-year. A loss of roughly 100 million subscribers in India drove the decline, partially offset by growth in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.
Sony Pictures 2025 earnings hit by Pixomondo shutdown
Operating income fell 11% to $687 million. The drop included JPY27.1 billion ($177 million) in one-time charges tied to the shutdown of Pixomondo. Sony had acquired the VFX and virtual production company in October 2022. Excluding those charges, SPE’s operating income rose 13% year-over-year in yen terms and 11% in U.S. dollars, to around $858 million.
PlayStation segment: record users, fewer consoles sold
Sony’s PlayStation segment posted flat fiscal 2025 revenue of JPY4.685 trillion. PS5 hardware unit sales fell to 16.0 million from 18.5 million the prior year, offset by stronger results in network services and third-party software. Adjusted operating income for the segment rose 45% to a record once charges are excluded. Those charges totaled JPY120 billion for the Bungie studio impairment and JPY18.3 billion in corrected development costs. PlayStation monthly active users reached 125 million in March 2026, a quarterly record up 1% year-on-year. Total play time in the quarter also rose 1% year-on-year.
Spider-Man and Jumanji headline the 2026 slate
Sony guided for SPE revenue growth of 9% in fiscal 2026, to JPY1.630 trillion. Higher box office expectations and paid subscriber growth at Crunchyroll are expected to drive the increase. The company has said it is ‘focusing on creating and strengthening franchises.’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens July 31, with Jumanji: Open World following on December 25. Operating income for the segment is projected to rise 38%, partly because the prior-year comparison included the Pixomondo writedown.
In the March 2026 quarter, SPE revenue rose 14%. A standout was Sony Pictures Animation’s family film GOAT, produced by Stephen Curry. The action-comedy earned $192 million at the global box office following its February 13 wide release. Across Sony Group as a whole, fiscal 2025 revenue rose 4% to JPY12.48 trillion. The music segment’s operating income climbed 25% to a record JPY447 billion, driven by streaming growth in recorded music and publishing.
