Activision and Paramount Pictures have confirmed a release date for the Call of Duty movie: June 30, 2028. The announcement also names Paramount CEO David Ellison as a central figure in the production, with producer Rob Kostich describing what both sides want from the collaboration.
The Call of Duty movie was first publicly confirmed last September. Since then, concrete details have been limited. This week adds a date and a few lines of creative direction from Kostich, who said the goal is to ensure “the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real” alongside “epic scope.”
The Call of Duty movie takes an original story approach
The film will not adapt any specific game in the series. Earlier statements from the production said it would “honour and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place” and create “an unforgettable blockbuster movie experience that our community loves.” That language points to an original screenplay set within the Call of Duty universe, rather than a retelling of Modern Warfare, Black Ops, or any other entry.
That approach makes practical sense. Call of Duty spans more than 20 mainline titles across two decades, with settings ranging from World War II to near-future conflicts. Picking one game as a template would invite comparisons the film could not fully satisfy. Starting from scratch lets the production define its own version of the universe without competing with how players remember specific campaigns.
Other game franchises have gone the same route. The Halo series and the Uncharted film both drew on world-building and characters from their source material without committing to a specific game’s plot. Results have been mixed, but the approach avoids a common failure mode for adaptations: disappointing fans who wanted a direct translation.
Ellison and Paramount’s blockbuster strategy
David Ellison took operational control of Paramount in 2024, with a stated focus on IP-driven blockbusters capable of global theatrical runs. The Call of Duty movie fits that brief directly: the franchise has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and is one of gaming’s most commercially recognised names.
Kostich’s framing of Ellison’s role in creative terms, rather than purely financial ones, suggests both sides want the film to work as a straight action movie, not just a brand exercise. How well that carries through to the finished product is something audiences in 2028 will judge.
What hasn’t been announced yet
No director, cast, or story specifics accompanied the Call of Duty movie release date. The two-year runway to June 2028 suggests production is still in early stages. More significant announcements will likely arrive in late 2026 or through 2027 as the project moves forward.
The release date was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
