Hayden Panettiere has died at 36. Long before Heroes made her a household name, the Hayden Panettiere Kingdom Hearts casting introduced her to a generation of gamers as the voice of Kairi. Her representative confirmed her death to Deadline on August 17.
Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere, released a statement on her behalf. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her,” he said. He asked for privacy while the family processes the loss. According to a source, Panettiere died in South Carolina. Few details have emerged, and an investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
Hayden Panettiere and Kingdom Hearts
Panettiere voiced Kairi, one of Kingdom Hearts‘ three central characters, in Square Enix’s original 2002 game. She returned for Kingdom Hearts II in 2005, again opposite Haley Joel Osment’s Sora. The role made her one of the more recognizable voices in early-2000s console gaming, years before actors routinely built public followings between projects. Disney recast Kairi with Alyson Stoner starting with Kingdom Hearts III. Panettiere’s original performance remains the version many longtime series fans associate with the character.
From child actor to Heroes and Nashville
Panettiere started young. She appeared in commercials, played Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live from 1994 to 1997, and voiced Lizzie Spaulding on The Guiding Light. At 9, she made her feature debut in A Bug’s Life. She appeared the same year in The Object of My Affection.
Her biggest break came in 2006, when NBC cast her as cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes, a series about ordinary people discovering superpowers. The role made Panettiere one of the most recognized young actresses on network television. She followed it with the 2009 comedy I Love You Beth Cooper. She also played Kirby Reed three times in the Scream franchise: Scream 4 in 2011, a cameo in 2022’s Scream, and Scream VI in 2023. She then spent five seasons on ABC’s Nashville, playing country star Juliette Barnes opposite Connie Britton.
Personal struggles and family loss
Panettiere wrote openly about depression and addiction in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published earlier this year. The struggles began while she was still a teenager on Heroes. She also discussed postpartum depression after the 2014 birth of her daughter, Kaya, with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. In 2018, she sent Kaya to live with Klitschko in Ukraine while she worked on her recovery. In 2023, Panettiere’s younger brother, Jensen, died at 28 from an enlarged heart and aortic valve complications.
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, her father, and extended family. The family had not announced memorial details as of publication.
