Dave Bautista Kratos casting confirmed for God of War

Dave Bautista is set to play Kratos in Amazon Prime Video‘s God of War series, replacing an injured Ryan Hurst in the lead role. Variety reported the Dave Bautista Kratos casting on August 20. Production is expected to resume in Vancouver within weeks.

Amazon announced Hurst as Kratos in January 2026, but a torn bicep sustained on set required surgery. The injury threatened to push filming into 2027, so Amazon and Sony, which co-produces the show, opted to recast rather than wait. Prime Video had already given the series a two-season order, with both seasons shooting back-to-back, so a long delay would have held up the entire production.

How the Dave Bautista Kratos casting came together

Bautista’s physique made him one of the few actors in Hollywood who could step into a physically demanding role like Kratos on short notice. The character’s muscular build is central to how he reads in the games. Bautista has maintained that kind of conditioning throughout his acting career, and he does not need months of prep time to look the part.

WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman represent Bautista. All scenes Hurst filmed before the injury will now be reshot with Bautista in the role. Filming had originally started back in February.

What the God of War series covers

The show adapts the story of the two most recent God of War video games, 2018’s God of War and 2022’s God of War Ragnarök. Those games moved Kratos out of Greek mythology and into the Norse pantheon, casting him as a father raising his ten-year-old son Atreus rather than the vengeful figure of the earlier titles. According to the official logline, Kratos and Atreus set out to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s late wife and Atreus’s mother. Along the way, Kratos tries to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Callum Vinson remains cast as Atreus opposite Bautista’s Kratos. The rest of the cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin. Alastair Duncan plays Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka play brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein plays Baldur.

Who is running the God of War series

Ronald D. Moore is writer, showrunner, and executive producer under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. Maril Davis of Tall Ship also executive produces, alongside God of War game director Cory Barlog, Hermen Hulst, and Roy Lee.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios co-produce the series, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. With the Dave Bautista Kratos casting confirmed, the production has a clear path to resuming principal photography.
