Nintendo has released a free update for Mario Kart World that adds 10 tracks pulled from the original Super Nintendo game. It also adds two Knockout Tour routes. The Mario Kart World update is live now on Nintendo Switch 2.
The new courses come from 1992’s Super Mario Kart and include Choco Island, Vanilla Lake and Ghost Valley. Nintendo has rebuilt them as faithful recreations of their SNES layouts. The publisher says the tracks have been “hiding in plain sight” since Mario Kart World launched, and all 10 are now selectable in VS Race mode.
What changes in the Mario Kart World update
Mario Kart World usually has racers collect items from floating boxes scattered across each course. On the new SNES tracks, question block panels embedded directly in the road replace those floating boxes, mirroring how the original 16-bit game worked. It is a small mechanical shift, but one aimed at players who remember the 1992 release.
Nintendo has not published a full list of all 10 returning courses. It named only three in its announcement. Players will see the complete roster once the Mario Kart World update installs and the SNES tracks appear in VS Race mode selection.
Two new Knockout Tour rallies join the roster
Alongside the SNES courses, the update adds two new routes to Knockout Tour, Mario Kart World’s elimination-based mode. Nintendo named the two routes Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally. Both join Drill Rally and Boomerang Rally, which arrived in July. Four rally slots in the mode remain empty, which suggests more routes are still to come.
Knockout Tour strips racers from the field as each leg ends. A large starting grid narrows down to a single winner across a linked chain of courses. Adding named rallies, rather than loose track lists, has been Nintendo’s approach to the mode since launch. Today’s additions extend that structure instead of replacing it.
Part of a steady run of free content
The SNES tracks and Knockout Tour additions extend a run of free post-launch support for Mario Kart World. The game arrived alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025 as one of the console’s flagship titles. The previous update expanded Photo Mode, letting players apply stickers they had unlocked in-game to their screenshots.
Nintendo has continued to add tracks, modes and cosmetic options in the months since launch, consistent with how it supported earlier series entries.
