Yuji Horii AI game took 30 minutes to build with Claude

Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, has released a short browser game that he says he made in about 30 minutes using Anthropic‘s Claude. The Yuji Horii AI project is called Komiya in the Interrogation Room, and he shared it on X on October 11 alongside a post praising what the technology lets a single person do.

The game has a personal link to Horii’s early career. Before Dragon Quest, he wrote The Portopia Serial Murder Case, a 1983 PC detective adventure credited with paving the way for Nintendo’s Famicom Detective Club series. Komiya in the Interrogation Room works as a loose spiritual successor to that game.

How Komiya in the Interrogation Room plays

The whole game takes place inside one interrogation. Komiya, the 72-year-old suspect, is under questioning over a possible safe robbery, and he lies constantly. Players pick from lines of questioning the game provides to work out the truth behind his answers.

Two meters track the conversation: Agitation and Resistance. Both rise and fall depending on how the player questions Komiya. If either hits its maximum of 100, he may stop answering, so players must balance pressure against patience.

Yuji Horii AI comments compare 1983 to today

In his post, Horii contrasted the new game with how he built Portopia more than four decades ago. “Back when I made The Portopia Serial Murder Case on PC, I had to come up with the story myself, draw the art, write the code, and create everything by myself,” he wrote.

“Now, with AI, even if you can’t draw, or you can’t program, you can create a game by yourself simply by asking the AI to do it for you. It’s incredible.”

The post adds to a string of Yuji Horii AI remarks. Over recent months, Horii, who also co-wrote Chrono Trigger, has posted about AI several times on social media. In one, he said the technology “hardly ever” makes things up anymore.

Meanwhile, the Dragon Quest series has appeared in several generative AI promotions in Japan, run in partnership with Google‘s Gemini.

Portopia’s earlier AI remake

Outside Japan, Portopia is better known for a 2023 experiment by Square Enix. The publisher released an AI tech preview that rebuilt the adventure around natural language processing, and the release drew poor reviews on Steam.

However, a more traditional version is also on the way. G-Mode plans a Portopia remake for next year, made by developers and artists rather than built around AI tools.

What Horii is working on next

The Yuji Horii AI game sits alongside much larger work. Horii is writing the scenario for Dragon Quest XII, which went through a major reboot over the past year.

Komiya in the Interrogation Room, by contrast, is already playable in a browser. It is a short experiment, and Horii presented it as an example of what one person can now produce without drawing or programming skills, rather than as a commercial release.
