Jagex cancels RuneScape Reignited after player backlash

Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, the fresh-start mode it announced at RuneFest less than two weeks ago. The studio confirmed the decision in a blog post and video on October 15, after a wave of criticism from its existing player base.

Reignited was designed to let new and lapsed players begin again on separate, dedicated servers. Players objected almost immediately. Their complaints covered a possible split in the community, limits on how Reignited characters could interact with everyone else, and the need to pay for a separate subscription.

How RuneScape Reignited unravelled

A few days after the reveal, Jagex apologised to veteran players who felt pushed aside. It said it was “exploring a heavy set of revisions to Reignited based on your feedback.” Shortly afterwards, the studio published a list of planned changes and asked for another round of comments before following up.

That follow-up turned out to be a cancellation. Ryan Philpott, the associate creative director known in the community as Mod Ryan, announced it directly. “It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,” he said. “Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community.”

In the video, Philpott also tied the decision to the studio’s past. He said the last time Jagex ignored player feedback, combat “changed forever,” and the game took more than a decade to recover. That is a reference to the 2012 Evolution of Combat update.

What happens in December

The December 2 launch date stays in place, but without the split worlds RuneScape Reignited would have introduced. On that day, Jagex will release a new Adventure Guide and the first part of a remastered early-game journey. A 10-day free trial also starts then, open to new characters and to players returning after at least six months away. It includes full access to all worlds and content.

The 2027 roadmap is unchanged as well. Philpott pointed to new combat and skilling content, a return to a full grandmaster quest that closes long-running storylines, and a rework of a core skill. Plugin support launches on Monday.

A pattern of reversals

Dropping RuneScape Reignited is not the first time Jagex has backed down under pressure. In 2023, it dropped a planned RuneScape battle pass after heavy criticism. Then, in 2025, it removed the Treasure Hunter microtransaction system. CEO Jon Bellamy described that move as part of a wider effort to deliver “deeper value, greater fairness and long-term improvements for players.”

Other decisions have stayed in place, however. Recent membership price increases drew complaints, and Jagex kept its choice to drop in-game Pride Month events despite significant community pushback.

Philpott closed the announcement by asking players to keep speaking up. “Please keep letting us know when you feel we’re getting it wrong, and shout with that same energy when you think we’re getting it right too,” he said.
