2026 Tony Awards winners: Schmigadoon! takes best musical

Schmigadoon! won best musical at the 2026 Tony Awards on Sunday, while Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman claimed six trophies to lead all productions. Liberation took best play, and Ragtime won best revival of a musical.

Pink hosted the ceremony, broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+ from Radio City Music Hall, marking her first time leading the Tonys. Laura Benanti and Tituss Burgess co-hosted the Act One preshow, distributing the first batch of awards before the main broadcast. The 79th annual Tony Awards ceremony also included anniversary performances for The Book of Mormon, Chicago, and A Chorus Line.

Death of a Salesman leads the 2026 Tony Awards winners with six prizes

The Scott Rudin-produced revival, directed by Joe Mantello and starring Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf, and Christopher Abbott, won best revival of a play, best direction of a play, featured actress in a play, scenic design, lighting design, and sound design. Metcalf won the featured actress prize. Design awards went to Chloe Lamford (scenic), Jack Knowles (lighting), and Mikaal Sulaiman (sound).

Best play went to Liberation, written by Bess Wohl and produced by Roundabout Theatre Company. The show took only that award despite appearing in contention across several categories.

Schmigadoon! and The Lost Boys finish tied

Schmigadoon! and The Lost Boys entered Sunday as the most-nominated shows with 12 nominations each and finished tied at four wins apiece. Schmigadoon! won best musical, best original score, best book of a musical (Cinco Paul), and best orchestrations (Doug Besterman and Mike Morris). The Lost Boys won featured actor in a musical (Ali Louis Bourzgui), featured actress in a musical (Shoshana Bean), scenic design (Dane Laffrey), and lighting design (Jen Schriever and Michael Arden).

Ragtime claims the revival prize with four wins

Lincoln Center Theater’s revival of Ragtime, directed by Lear deBessonet, won best revival of a musical, lead actor in a musical (Joshua Henry), lead actress in a musical (Caissie Levy), and sound design of a musical (Kai Harada). The production converted four wins from 11 nominations.

Cats: The Jellicle Ball won three Tony Awards from its nine nominations. Directors Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch took best direction of a musical, Omari Wiles and Arturo Lyons won best choreography, and Qween Jean claimed best costume design of a musical.

Performance winners

John Lithgow won best actor in a play for Giant at the 2026 Tonys, and Lesley Manville took best actress in a play for Oedipus. Alden Ehrenreich won featured actor in a play for Becky Shaw. In the musical categories, Ragtime’s Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy took the lead acting prizes, while Ali Louis Bourzgui and Shoshana Bean of The Lost Boys claimed both featured acting awards.

Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show entered with multiple nominations, including Stephanie Hsu for lead actress in a musical and Luke Evans for lead actor in a musical, but left without any awards. Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), nominated for best musical among other categories, also went home empty-handed.
