Aspyr has released The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The PC version is available through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. The remaster of the 2011 action RPG is priced at $19.99, and the Switch and Switch 2 versions arrive in Europe on August 18.
The original game, developed by Snowblind Studios, let players fight through a side story set during the events of Tolkien’s trilogy. The remaster keeps that structure intact while bringing the visuals and performance up to current hardware standards. Meanwhile, publisher Aspyr has not detailed specific graphical or technical upgrades beyond the platform move itself.
Playable characters in war in the north legacy edition
Players choose between three characters at the start of the campaign: Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster; and Farin, a Dwarven Champion. Each has a distinct skill set and gear progression. The game supports co-op for up to three players total, either online or through split-screen. At certain points, players can also take control of Beleram, a Great Eagle.
The campaign sends this new Fellowship through locations familiar to readers of the books and viewers of Peter Jackson’s films. Stops include Rivendell, Lothlórien, the Lonely Mountain, and Mirkwood. Enemies include Orcs, Trolls, Wargs, Barrow-wights, and Fell Beasts. Aspyr also lists customizable skills and gear among the RPG progression running alongside the combat.
Pricing and availability
War in the North Legacy Edition costs $19.99 in the United States, £18.99 in the United Kingdom, and €23.99 across the eurozone. That matches the price of the original 2011 release rather than a full-priced remaster. Warner Bros. Interactive published that original version for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. It stood out among licensed Middle-earth games for centering cooperative combat instead of open-world exploration.
Story and setting
The story centers on Agandaur, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron who has gathered a large force in the ruins of Fornost. Frodo and Samwise make their way toward Mount Doom in the main trilogy’s timeline. Meanwhile, this new Fellowship works to stop Agandaur’s army before it can move south. Aspyr describes the tone as darker and more mature than the mainline film series, with combat and narrative elements built around that framing.
The PS5, Xbox Series, and PC versions are available worldwide now through their respective storefronts. Switch and Switch 2 owners in Europe will need to wait until August 18 for their release. Aspyr has not specified a separate date for other regions on those two platforms. The re-release arrives as older licensed games from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era continue finding their way to current hardware. Players who missed the original get a chance to try it without hunting down last-generation consoles.
