Typhoon Dujuan is cutting Tokyo Game Show 2026 a day short. Organizers are canceling what would have been the first five-day run in the convention’s history. The show will now close on September 20 instead of running through September 21 as planned. The storm is bearing down on Japan’s Kanto region, and safety came first.
Organizers announced the change on X on September 19. “Due to the approach of Typhoon No. 25, strong winds and rain are expected to intensify in the afternoon and beyond, and disruptions to transportation are also a concern,” they wrote.
“Therefore, prioritizing the safety of all attendees, exhibitors, and related parties, as well as ensuring safe return home, we have decided to cancel the event for the entire day.” They added an apology for the late notice. “We sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to attending for this unfortunate news.”
Anyone holding a ticket for September 21 will be refunded. Organizers have not detailed how the cancellation affects exhibitors who paid for booth space across all five days, or whether any of that cost will be returned as well. Several major publishers had built out elaborate presences on the show floor for the full run, including Square Enix and Sony’s PlayStation division. This year’s event also marks the 30th anniversary of Tokyo Game Show, which added extra weight to the shortened schedule.
Why Tokyo Game Show 2026 added a fifth day
Organizers extended the convention from four days to five because September 21 falls on a public holiday in Japan this year. The anniversary made an expanded schedule feel fitting, at least until the forecast changed. New game announcements have been sparse this year, but publishers still poured resources into elaborate booths. Square Enix built a hands-on demo area for Final Fantasy VII Revelation. A towering statue of Sephiroth held his sword Masamune overhead, positioned as if about to strike the ground.
PlayStation scraps its final-day plans
PlayStation had been drawing crowds with large screenings of the extended Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer. The screenings paired footage with in-person special effects timed to match the action on screen. Those screenings, along with the rest of PlayStation’s hands-on demos and streaming events scheduled for September 21, are now canceled.
Sony confirmed the decision in a separate post on X. “As a result, the hands-on demos and streaming events scheduled for September 21 at the PlayStation booth will also be canceled,” the company said. “We regret to inform everyone who was looking forward to it, but we kindly ask for your understanding.”
The Japan Meteorological Agency expects Typhoon Dujuan to reach Kanto, the region that includes Tokyo, around Monday night local time. Forecasters project wind speeds could climb as high as 78 miles per hour as the storm moves through. Organizers had already flagged transportation disruptions as a concern in their announcement, and Kanto includes some of the busiest rail lines attendees use to reach the venue.
Tokyo Game Show will still run as scheduled through September 20. The shortened, four-day event now stands in for what would have been the show’s longest edition yet, at least until Typhoon Dujuan changed those plans.
