Sony has no launch window for the PS6 yet. The company’s PS6 release date question remains open largely because of a supply squeeze tied to artificial intelligence.
Hiroki Totoki, chief executive of Sony, told the Wall Street Journal about the holdup. He said component shortages driven by AI data center demand are making it difficult to commit to a launch window.
Console makers typically space out roughly seven years between full hardware generations. The PlayStation 5 launched in late 2020, so industry watchers had penciled in the back half of 2027 as a plausible window for a successor. Totoki’s comments suggest Sony will miss that timeline. A PS6 release date announcement may still be some way off.
Why the PS6 release date keeps slipping
Totoki did not detail every factor behind the delay. He pointed to strained energy and chip supplies, along with ongoing trade disputes. “We need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape,” he said.
Demand for parts used in data centers and generative AI systems is outstripping supply. That squeeze is hitting console manufacturers, which compete for the same components as AI hardware makers.
The shortage makes it harder for any manufacturer to keep existing products in stock, let alone plan a global console launch on schedule. Data centers built for generative AI draw on the same categories of components that console makers need, including semiconductors, memory chips and power infrastructure.
That backdrop leaves Sony with little room to commit to a timeline before the parts situation stabilizes.
Industry turmoil adds to the uncertainty
Game development has been unsteady over the past few years. Most major publishers have carried out layoffs, and numerous projects have been canceled or delayed. Launching a new console while stretching development teams further would add strain at an already difficult time for the industry.
The timing of Grand Theft Auto 6 may also factor into Sony’s thinking. After repeated delays, Rockstar Games’ title is set to arrive this November. Sony will want strong PS5 sales through the holiday season, and an early PS6 announcement could prompt undecided buyers to hold off. Some may simply wait for the newer hardware instead.
The same logic applies to other anticipated releases, including Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Big-budget PS5 games still look and run well on current hardware. That reduces the pressure on Sony to rush a successor to market while so many strong titles remain ahead of it.
What comes next for the PS6
For now, players hoping for a firm release date for Sony’s next console will have to keep waiting. Sony has not offered a revised timeline.
The mix of chip shortages, industry instability and a packed PS5 release schedule suggests any announcement is still years away rather than months.
