GTA 6 launch trailer sets up Jason and Lucia’s Leonida story

Rockstar Games has released the GTA 6 launch trailer, a 90-second video that sets out the plot of Grand Theft Auto 6 and reintroduces its two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. The game arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19.

The GTA 6 launch trailer lands about a month before release. Grand Theft Auto 6 is also Rockstar’s first major new single-player game since Red Dead Redemption 2, which came out on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018.

What the GTA 6 launch trailer reveals about the story

Rockstar’s official description opens with two words, “Vice City, USA,” and frames the plot around a job that goes wrong. “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them,” it reads.

When an easy score falls apart, the pair end up “on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.” From there, they are pulled into a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida. According to the description, they are “forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Dialogue in the trailer also touches on both characters’ pasts. Jason says he “got in some trouble in the Army” and didn’t leave “on the best of terms.” Meanwhile, another line announces a free call from Lucia Caminos, and she later asks, “Are we gonna be okay?”

Justice scores Grand Theft Auto 6

The music in the trailer comes from French electronic duo Justice. According to Rockstar, the pair also composed the original score for the game.

In addition, a new Justice single called Flower in a Hurricane will appear on Grand Theft Auto 6: The Album, the official soundtrack. The track includes guest vocals and performances from Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

Rockstar says it captured the GTA 6 launch trailer entirely on PlayStation 5. However, the studio did not say whether that meant the base console or a PlayStation 5 Pro.

Rockstar plans a shorter wait for its next game

The November release ends a long gap between new Rockstar titles. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, studio heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut said the next Rockstar game will not take another eight years to arrive.

Both said the technology and the team built for Grand Theft Auto 6 will carry over to the next project, which should cut development time. “The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” Hooker said.

He added that the studio can now “go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content.” Garbut said Rockstar made foundational changes to its technology during development. “But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart,” he said.
