Sony has set February 16, 2027 as the release date for God of War Laufey, and confirmed that Kratos will return in the next mainline entry, which connects directly to Laufey’s story.
Cory Barlog, creative head at Sony Santa Monica Studio, revealed both details during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. He did not share specifics about the following game beyond confirming the connection to Laufey and Kratos’s involvement.
God of War Laufey release date lands in February 2027
God of War Laufey is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. Sony has positioned the game as a stand-alone entry in the God of War series rather than a numbered sequel, distinct from the Kratos-led games Sony Santa Monica has built since 2018. The date places Laufey ahead of the still-untitled mainline entry that will bring Kratos back to the story.
Laufey moves the story away from Kratos
Laufey is the first mainline God of War game to center on a protagonist other than Kratos. Players take on the role of Faye, also known as Laufey the Just, Kratos’s Norse wife and the mother of Atreus. Faye dies before the events of 2018’s God of War, and Laufey fills in what happened to her afterward.
Barlog said the goal behind Laufey was to widen the scope of the series rather than simply extend Kratos’s story. “I wanted to show an extension of this world where the characters you’ll encounter are unexpected. Laufey is a continuation of what came before and to prepare and expand what comes next,” he said at the panel.
What happens in God of War Laufey
Sony announced Laufey during a State of Play broadcast in June, showing more than 20 minutes of gameplay. According to the official synopsis, Faye wakes up in a strange land after her own funeral and finds that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are under threat.
“To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods, the Everywhen, where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic,” the synopsis reads.
Laufey ships on disc despite Sony’s physical media shift
Earlier this month, Sony Santa Monica confirmed Laufey will be available on physical disc. That commitment matters because Sony has separately announced plans to end physical media production for PlayStation games going forward. Laufey remains one of the last major PlayStation titles guaranteed a disc release under that plan.
With the release date now locked to February 16, 2027, and Kratos’s return confirmed for whatever comes after, Sony Santa Monica has mapped out its God of War plans through at least two more entries. Barlog gave no timeline for the Kratos-led follow-up.
