GTA 6 Game Awards: Rockstar beats the 2026 cutoff by a day

Grand Theft Auto 6 will qualify for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026 with one day to spare. The show’s organizers have set the eligibility cutoff for every category at Friday, November 20, and Rockstar Games releases its game on November 19. That timing settles the GTA 6 Game Awards question before voting even starts.

The rule is simple. Any game in contention must be publicly available for purchase by the cutoff date. A launch on November 21 would have pushed GTA 6 into the 2027 cycle, a full year after release.

How the GTA 6 Game Awards window came together

The Game Awards eligibility window has followed the same structure for years. As a result, it is unlikely that Rockstar planned its launch around the cutoff, as GamesRadar+ also pointed out. Still, the outcome is the same: the game makes it in.

GTA 6 took a long road to this date. Rockstar first targeted fall 2025, then moved the game to May 26, 2026. A second delay set the current November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Either of the earlier dates would have cleared the cutoff easily. The current one clears it by a single day.

Why awards matter to Take-Two

The Game Awards draws a large audience across the industry. In recent years, the show has become the peak of an awards circuit that lifted Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 while both games were still selling strongly. Baldur’s Gate 3 won Game of the Year in 2023, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took the top prize in 2025.

For Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, the stakes are high. GTA 6 is one of the most expensive games ever made. Meanwhile, a strong awards run in December would keep the game in the headlines through the holiday sales period.

However, the timing also creates a short runway. Jurors would have only a few weeks with the game before nominations close, compared with months for titles released earlier in the year.

The rest of the 2026 field

GTA 6 will not be the only contender. GamesRadar+ names Saros, Slay the Spire 2, and Resident Evil Requiem as likely nominees among games already on sale. The outlet also points to the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake as the strongest challenger to Rockstar’s game.

Nominations for The Game Awards usually arrive in mid-to-late November, shortly after the eligibility window closes. That puts the GTA 6 Game Awards nomination announcement only days after launch. Players will have had the game for less than a week by then.

The GTA 6 Game Awards outcome will depend on how jurors respond to a game they have only just started playing. The Game Awards has not yet named its 2026 nominees.
