Minecraft Switch 2 release date set for 27th October

Mojang has confirmed a release date for the dedicated Minecraft Switch 2 version: 27th October 2026. The game is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 with Vibrant Visuals turned on by default. Mojang has also confirmed a digital upgrade path for players who already own Minecraft on the original Switch.

The confirmation ends months of guessing about when Minecraft would get a proper Switch 2 release. Nintendo’s newer console launched in 2025. Minecraft has been available on the original Switch for years through the Bedrock Edition, and that version stays playable while owners wait for the dedicated Switch 2 build. Mojang has not shared pricing or full upgrade terms yet. Further details are still to come closer to launch.

What the Minecraft Switch 2 version changes

The Switch 2 release supports Vibrant Visuals, a graphics option Mojang first rolled out to Minecraft across other platforms in March 2025. This time, it ships as the default visual mode, not an optional toggle.

Mojang describes the upgrade as adding “enhanced lighting, shadow effects and more” to the game’s blocky world. That marks a step beyond the flatter lighting long associated with the Bedrock Edition on Switch, and it brings the console version closer to Minecraft on PC.

Super Mario Mash-Up Pack updated for the new visuals

The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is also getting an update. The pack is exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft, and it swaps the game’s textures, skins and music for Mario-themed versions. Mojang says the pack will be adjusted to work properly alongside Vibrant Visuals.

That means the reworked lighting and shadows extend to the Mario content instead of clashing with it. The pack has been a fixture of Nintendo’s Minecraft releases for years, giving Switch players a Mario-flavoured spin on survival and creative worlds since its original debut on Wii U.

Save data and the digital upgrade path

Players moving from the original Switch version will be able to carry their save data across to the Switch 2 release, according to Mojang. That covers single-player worlds tied to an existing account. Mojang has not said whether the transfer extends to realms or multiplayer worlds hosted by other players. Existing Switch owners can use the confirmed digital upgrade path once Mojang shares the remaining terms, expected closer to launch.

For now, the confirmed facts are straightforward. A dedicated Minecraft release lands on Switch 2 on 27th October 2026. Vibrant Visuals ships by default, and the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack gets an accompanying update.

Existing Switch owners get a save-compatible upgrade path, with pricing still to be announced. Nintendo has been steadily filling out its Switch 2 library with upgraded versions of existing games, and this Minecraft release follows that same pattern.
