PS5 disc warning label flags 2028 all-digital shift

Sony has reportedly started placing a PS5 disc warning label on new PlayStation 5 boxes, alerting buyers that physical disc games are going away in 2028. An image shared on X by content creator Behind the Games shows a sticker attached to a PS5 box referencing the change, though Sony has not confirmed the label is genuine.

The alleged sticker reads: “IMPORTANT NOTICE: From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” No other users have independently verified the label yet, and it remains unclear whether it has been applied to every PS5 variant currently on shelves.

The current PS5 lineup already includes a Digital Edition without a disc drive alongside a standard model that ships with one. Sony’s Slim revision goes further, letting owners attach or remove the drive as a separate accessory. After the January 2028 cutoff, that drive would still play older disc-based games already on shelves, but it would have nothing new to load once every future release ships digital-only.

PS5 disc warning label follows Sony’s backlash response

The reported sticker follows weeks of criticism from players after Sony first revealed plans to stop manufacturing PlayStation discs. Last week, the company broke its silence on the reaction during an earnings call, with Sony CFO Lin Tao acknowledging the pushback directly for the first time.

“To this decision we have received various opinions, and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forward those views to us,” she said. “Games are loved by many people, it’s a form of entertainment that’s loved by people, and it’s connected to people’s fond memories in many cases, and so we understand those emotions.”

Tao added that Sony intends to “cautiously move forward” with the shift away from discs, while its focus shifts to keeping players engaged once PlayStation games move to an all-digital model. “We want to consider that, and in the future digital ecosystem how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore,” she said.

Retailers may still stock digital codes in boxes

During the same Q&A session, Sony said it has been in talks with retailers about how physical shelves will look once discs disappear. The company suggested that stores in the US may continue selling boxed products after January 2028, but with a printed code inside rather than a disc.

That arrangement would let brick-and-mortar retailers keep PlayStation titles on display without stocking physical media, and it would give buyers who prefer a boxed copy something to put on a shelf. Whether that model extends beyond the US has not been addressed, and Sony has not said how European or Asian retailers will handle the same transition.

For now, the warning label itself is the clearest sign yet that the cutoff date is firm. If confirmed, it suggests Sony is preparing to notify buyers directly at the point of sale rather than relying on announcements alone, giving anyone still buying disc-based hardware a heads-up about what stops working the way they expect after January 2028.
