EA DICE and Bungie are both interested in developing Star Wars Battlefront 3, according to a rumour printed in a new “final” issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. The report claims Lucasfilm is still looking for a studio to make the sequel, and that neither company has signed on yet.
Former EGM staff produced the issue as part of a Kickstarter campaign for a retrospective book on the magazine’s history, and it has now reached backers. Video Games Chronicle reported on the rumour on October 20.
What the Quartermann column says about Star Wars Battlefront 3
The claim comes from “Quartermann,” a rumour column that ran in EGM for years. The magazine presented Quartermann as an industry insider, though the column most likely collected gossip from across the staff.
According to the column, Lucasfilm has been hunting for a development partner. “So far no one has stepped up, but yours truly is hearing two major game studios are circling the project like a couple of snow speeders,” it reads. DICE is the first contender, and the column adds a hope that the studio “learned their loot box lesson.”
Bungie is the second name. “The Q-Mann hears that if the Force is not entrusted to DICE it could land at none other than Halo, Destiny, and Marathon developer Bungie,” the column says. Bungie has been part of Sony Interactive Entertainment since 2022.
A rumour column with a recent track record
The column appears to have been written some time ago, and several of its claims have since come true. It correctly suggested that the star of Hideo Kojima‘s Physint came from the John Wick films. That actor turned out to be Bill SkarsgĂ„rd, who appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4.
It also said Diablo 4 was still planned for Nintendo Switch 2, which Blizzard confirmed last month. However, none of the companies involved has confirmed the Star Wars Battlefront 3 claim.
Battlefront 2’s rocky launch and late revival
DICE developed both Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront 2 for EA during the publisher’s exclusive Star Wars licensing deal. The series has had no new entry since Battlefront 2 arrived in 2017, and EA has not announced a Star Wars Battlefront 3.
That game launched to heavy criticism over its microtransactions. Estimates at the time suggested players needed around 40 hours to earn enough free credits to unlock a single hero, and the locked roster included Darth Vader. As a result, EA reversed its plan and removed the microtransactions entirely.
Reports at the time also claimed that Disney privately scolded EA once the story crossed from the games press into mainstream news.
Battlefront 2 found a second life in 2025. Its Reddit and TikTok communities pushed lapsed players to come back, and the game hit its highest concurrent player count on Steam to date.
Some former developers want a Star Wars Battlefront 3 too. Last year, Mats Helge Holm, who worked on the original release of Battlefront 2 and its Celebration Edition, said “many” ex-Battlefront staff would like to work on a new game. Asked which developers would return to EA, Holm replied: “Me, and having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together.”
