Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced a Bloodborne animated film, with content creator Jacksepticeye attached as a co-producer. The project was revealed at CinemaCon 2026 and has generated a divided reaction from the game’s fanbase.
Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment, described the Bloodborne animated film as R-rated and said it will be “very true” to the original game. Lyrical Animation and PlayStation Productions are also listed as co-producers.
Critics and fans have long considered Bloodborne one of the most atmospheric games of its generation. The 2015 action RPG, developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony for PlayStation 4, follows a hunter navigating a plague-stricken city through environments built on Gothic architecture and cosmic horror. It has held an unusually devoted following for over a decade.
Jacksepticeye is the online alias of Irish content creator Seán McLoughlin, one of the most subscribed gaming YouTubers in the world. McLoughlin is a documented Bloodborne fan, with tattoos from the game and years of public commentary about it. After the CinemaCon announcement, he addressed the fanbase directly on the r/bloodborne subreddit: “I am going to do everything in my power to make this the BEST Bloodborne adaptation possible.”
Why the Bloodborne animated film is dividing fans
Reception on Reddit was largely skeptical. Top comments questioned whether the announcement was genuine, and others pointed out that Sony had committed to a full animated feature before addressing the long-standing community request for a 60 FPS patch on the original PS4 release.
The more substantive concern is over FromSoftware’s apparent absence. Sony has not confirmed whether the studio has any creative role in the production. For much of the Bloodborne community, FromSoftware’s involvement in any adaptation would signal that the source material is in careful hands. Without it, the project raises questions about whose vision is actually guiding it.
Sony has not named a director or writer. Without those announcements, the creative direction of the film remains undefined, and the project is difficult to evaluate beyond its most basic parameters.
The case for McLoughlin’s involvement
McLoughlin has supporters within the fanbase. His affection for Bloodborne is long-standing and verifiable, and some fans argue that having a committed fan in a producer role beats the alternative: a studio proceeding without anyone in the room who cares about the game.
In practice, co-producer credits vary significantly. Some carry genuine creative weight; others are largely promotional. The director and writer, once announced, will say more about the film’s likely direction than any producer attachment.
As of now, Sony has not released a timeline for the Bloodborne animated film or announced additional cast and crew. What CinemaCon confirmed is that the project is in development, that it carries an R rating, and that Jacksepticeye is formally attached. Everything else remains to come.
