Sony Pictures has set July 30, 2027 as the release date for The Comebacker, a baseball drama starring Tom Hanks. The Comebacker release date puts the film in direct competition with Paramount’s A Quiet Place III, which opens the same weekend.
The project reunites Hanks with director Marielle Heller. The two worked together on the 2019 film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, in which Hanks played Fred Rogers. That role earned him a supporting actor Oscar nomination, one of several nods across a career that already includes wins for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. Sony landed The Comebacker after beating out two other studios that were also pursuing the project.
What the comebacker release date is attached to
The script comes from a short story by Dave Eggers, adapted for the screen by Heller. Hanks plays the pitching coach of a major league pitcher. That pitcher’s life changes after he is struck in the head by a line drive on the mound, a moment known in baseball as a comebacker. The injured pitcher is a significant role for an up-and-coming leading man, though Sony has not announced who will play the part.
Heller’s past work leans on character-driven stories rather than broad studio spectacle. Can You Ever Forgive Me? and The Diary of a Teenage Girl both fit that mold. The Comebacker appears to follow the same pattern, using a sports injury as the entry point for a story about identity and recovery rather than a straightforward sports film.
Playtone produces with MLB cooperation
Hanks’ production company Playtone is making the film with producer Leah Holzer. The production is working in cooperation with Major League Baseball. That arrangement points to access to league branding, and possibly team and stadium imagery, though Sony has not detailed the scope of MLB’s involvement.
No cast beyond Hanks has been confirmed. Sony has not released a trailer or shared additional details about production timing. The studio’s decision to hold the film for a late July slot places it alongside Paramount’s continuation of the A Quiet Place franchise, a series that has drawn strong opening-weekend turnouts since its 2018 debut.
The bidding war Sony won for The Comebacker stands out. Few original baseball dramas make it to a wide theatrical release. Studios have leaned toward franchise sequels and established intellectual property for major summer dates in recent years. A script built around a single injury, rather than a season-long arc or a real-life biography, is an unusual bet for a July slot typically reserved for tentpole titles.
MLB’s involvement also raises the possibility of on-field access during filming. Studios have sought that kind of authenticity before in sports productions, but it requires direct league cooperation to secure. Sony has not said whether any current or former MLB players will appear.
For now, July 30, 2027 is the only confirmed detail beyond the setup. It is a baseball movie built around one violent moment on the mound, directed by a filmmaker known for smaller, character-first work, backed by a studio that fought to get it.
