Meta has started testing a premium Instagram subscription called Instagram Plus in a limited number of markets, according to TechCrunch. The company says the test is early-stage and focused on feature access rather than core app access.
The subscription adds tools aimed at heavy Instagram users, especially around Stories. Features include private Story viewing indicators, Story rewatch insights, expanded audience-list controls beyond Close Friends, a 24-hour Story extension option, and periodic Story spotlighting for extra visibility.
What Meta is testing
Users in test regions can reportedly subscribe at locally priced monthly tiers. Public screenshots indicate pilots in markets including Mexico, Japan and the Philippines, though Meta has not published a full country list.
Meta says this test is separate from Meta Verified, which targets creators and businesses with identity and impersonation protections. Instagram Plus appears positioned for general users who want additional social controls and visibility features.
Why this matters
The move expands Meta’s subscription strategy beyond verification and signals continued pressure on social platforms to diversify revenue beyond advertising. If testing converts well, Instagram Plus could become a broader paid layer in markets where subscription fatigue has so far limited adoption.
