Switch 2 lifetime sales have overtaken the GameCube, with Nintendo‘s newest console now sitting at 23.68 million units sold worldwide. The company confirmed the milestone in its latest financial results, which show the Switch 2 moved another 3.82 million consoles last quarter alone.
The total puts Switch 2 ahead of the GameCube‘s full lifetime haul of 21.74 million units. The older console took five years to reach that number, while Switch 2 got there in roughly one year and 25 days. The pace extends a run that already made it the fastest-selling game hardware device in United States history within months of launch. It needed only seven months to pass the Wii U‘s entire lifetime sales. The GameCube milestone follows that same pattern: steady, sustained demand rather than a single strong launch window that faded quickly.
Records like these matter for Nintendo because they signal whether early demand holds up once the launch rush is over. A console that sells well for a few months but slows down afterward tends to fall behind older hardware that had years to accumulate sales. Switch 2 has instead kept pace quarter after quarter. That consistency is why it is now passing consoles that had a five-year head start.
Switch 2 lifetime sales still trail the GameCube on software
Hardware totals tell only part of the story. The GameCube spent its five years on shelves competing against the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox, and it never came close to matching either on console sales. Still, the machine built a devoted following around games like Super Smash Bros Melee and Zelda: The Wind Waker. That library added up over time.
GameCube software sales reached 208.58 million copies over its lifetime, well ahead of the 58.17 million games Switch 2 has sold so far. Part of that gap reflects how much longer the GameCube has been on the market. Switch 2 is still filling out a software library that has yet to include several of Nintendo’s biggest franchises. The software comparison is likely to narrow as more of those games arrive.
Nintendo 64 is the next target
With 23.68 million units sold, Switch 2 needs another 9.25 million consoles to pass the Nintendo 64‘s lifetime total. Mainline entries in Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and The Legend of Zelda have yet to arrive on the console. Any one of them could accelerate hardware sales further once it ships.
An upcoming price increase for Switch 2 may complicate that timeline. Nintendo has not detailed how the higher price will affect sales momentum, though a costlier console typically softens demand, at least in the short term. How much of an effect it has will likely become clearer once the next round of financial results arrive.
The current sales race between Nintendo’s past and present hardware breaks down as follows:
- GameCube’s lifetime total of 21.74 million units, built up over five years, has now been passed by Switch 2
- Wii U’s entire lifetime sales fell within seven months of Switch 2’s launch
- Nintendo 64’s lifetime total of 32.93 million units is the next milestone, still 9.25 million consoles away
Switch 2 has already secured its place as Nintendo’s fastest-selling console. The remaining question is how quickly the Nintendo 64 record falls, and whether the pending price increase slows that pace before the console’s biggest franchises even arrive.
