Over the Hill, the off-road exploration game from Funselektor and Strelka Games, has crossed one million Steam wishlists ahead of its planned 2026 release. The developers are marking the occasion with a closed playtest from April 24 to 26, with sign-ups open now through April 16.
Funselektor made its name with Art of Rally, an isometric racer with a distinct visual style and precise driving mechanics. Over the Hill draws on the same attention to vehicle feel but moves away from structured racing entirely. Players take the wheel of classic cars from the 1960s to the 1980s and drive through open wilderness, tackling mud, deep snow, and rough terrain using both the vehicles themselves and a set of tools available to help navigate obstacles. The game supports solo play and co-op, and there is no racing element: the goal is to explore, find points of interest, complete tasks for characters encountered in the world, and use the rewards to unlock additional vehicles and upgrade equipment. A console version is in development, planned to arrive after the Steam release.
The closest genre comparison is Mudrunner and its follow-up Snowrunner, which also center on slow, deliberate vehicle handling across challenging terrain. Over the Hill shares that emphasis on physical driving but removes the cargo and logistics objectives that sit at the core of those games. Where Mudrunner gives players routes and deliveries to complete, Over the Hill leaves the agenda largely open, giving players terrain to navigate and things to find.
Algeria region at Triple-I
Alongside the wishlist announcement, Funselektor and Strelka Games revealed a new region during the Triple-I Initiative Showcase. The Algeria region takes inspiration from the real-world location and includes sprawling plateaus, ancient ruins, sand-swept valleys, and fallen meteorites as discoverable landmarks. A new trailer shown at the event gave the first detailed look at the region’s terrain and scale.
Playtest registration
The April 24-26 test is closed, with access going to registered participants rather than being open to all players. The developers have not specified what portion of the game will be available during the test window or how many players will be admitted. Sign-ups are open on Steam and close April 16.
Over the Hill has no fixed release date beyond 2026. The playtest gives the developers an early opportunity to gather feedback before launch, and offers interested players a first hands-on look at a game that has built a large audience without a confirmed ship date.
