Wit Studio confirms AI use in Ascendance of a Bookworm opening

Wit Studio has confirmed that generative AI was used in the opening sequence of Ascendance of a Bookworm‘s fourth season, following viewer complaints about background art in the episode that aired April 4. The studio pulled the opening from Crunchyroll‘s YouTube channel and committed to replacing it with hand-drawn artwork.

Wit Studio is the animation house behind Attack on Titan, Spy x Family, and Vinland Saga, productions associated with detailed hand-crafted work and high production values. The confirmation that AI reached one of its broadcasts comes from a studio whose audience closely watches for production quality.

What the studio’s investigation found

In an official statement, Wit Studio confirmed that AI was used “in some cuts in the opening sequence.” The studio attributed the lapse to “shortcomings in our production management and inspection systems.” Its stated policy is that it has “in principle…not permitted the use of generative AI” in its productions, meaning the content appeared in violation of the studio’s own rules.

The opening sequence will be “replaced with the completed version using the aforementioned background art materials” in future episodes. Wit Studio offered apologies to fans, the original author, and associated parties.

The outsourcing problem

The incident exposes how difficult it is for studios to maintain consistent policies across outsourced production pipelines. Terumi Nishii, a director connected to the production, had previously noted that animation studios are “using AI to generate rough drafts for direction corrections,” a practice that makes it hard to detect when a contracted company uses AI-generated assets at a later stage. That observation suggests the problem is not isolated to Wit Studio but reflects a broader challenge in how anime productions are staffed and monitored.

Wit Studio has not identified which contractor or department was responsible for the AI-generated background art. The lapse passed through production and delivery before viewers flagged it on social media following the April 4 premiere.

Fan response and industry context

Audience detection of AI-generated visuals in animation has become faster as the technology has spread. Viewers flagged the Ascendance of a Bookworm opening within days of broadcast, and Wit Studio responded with a public statement and content removal shortly after.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is adapted from a light novel series with a dedicated fanbase. The fourth season’s premiere had been anticipated, and the AI controversy drew attention across fan communities and industry observers. The show streams on Crunchyroll in Western markets.

The case fits a pattern of AI-related controversies in Japanese animation. Several studios have faced criticism after AI-generated material appeared in promotional content or broadcast episodes, with most incidents involving background art or animation frames where outsourcing is common and studio oversight is harder to enforce.

Wit Studio’s removal of the opening puts it among studios that have taken corrective action rather than letting flagged content remain in circulation. The studio has not stated what changes, if any, it plans to make to its production management processes.
