Steam Deck price hike pushes OLED models to $789 and $949

Valve has raised the price of its Steam Deck OLED models. The 512GB version moves from $549 to $789, a jump of $240, and the 1TB model goes from $649 to $949, an increase of $300. The steam deck price hike follows similar moves from Nintendo and Sony over recent months, though Valve’s increases are steeper in both dollar and percentage terms than what either console maker announced.

The older LCD Steam Deck model, still sold in select markets, keeps its current price. Refurbished units remain available as a lower-cost alternative. Valve has not publicly explained the specific reason for the increases. Hardware prices have been rising across gaming this year, and analysts have noted that major console makers tend to have more leverage with component suppliers than Valve does with the Steam Deck.

Regional pricing for Steam Deck OLED

The new prices are in effect now. Regional pricing for the OLED lineup:

  • Steam Deck 512GB OLED: $789 / £649 / €779
  • Steam Deck 1TB OLED: $949 / £779 / €919

Valve also has the Steam Controller and Steam Machine in development. The Steam Machine is designed to work as both a console and a PC. Neither product has launched yet, and neither is affected by the current steam deck price hike.

How the increase compares to Nintendo and Sony

Nintendo raised the Switch 2 price by $50 earlier this month, moving it from $449.99 to $499.99. Those changes are already in effect in Japan and will reach Western markets this September. Sony made comparable increases to the PlayStation 5 lineup in recent months, contributing to what has become an industry-wide pattern of hardware price adjustments in 2026.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has not ruled out additional Switch 2 price increases. Furukawa cited “uncertainties” around component costs that could run through 2027. The Switch 2 is approaching 20 million units sold ahead of its first anniversary next month, giving Nintendo commercial momentum even as its console costs more.

The Steam Deck price hike is larger than Nintendo’s by a wide margin. The 512GB OLED model is now 44% more expensive than before this week’s announcement; the 1TB is up roughly 46%. At $789 for entry-level, the Steam Deck OLED now costs more than a base PlayStation 5 or Switch 2. The Steam Deck runs a full PC operating system and supports the entire Steam library, which demands higher hardware specifications than a purpose-built console, but the gap in upfront cost is now harder to overlook.

What the steam deck price hike means for buyers

The Steam Deck has attracted buyers partly on its position as a capable portable gaming device at a price below a dedicated gaming PC. At these new price points, that argument weakens. The LCD model and refurbished options remain available for buyers unwilling to pay the higher rates. Valve has given no indication whether further price changes are planned.
