Nintendo has revised the Zelda movie release date again. The studio confirmed on May 14 that the live-action The Legend of Zelda film will arrive in cinemas worldwide on April 30, 2027. That is one week earlier than the previously announced May 7 date.
The announcement came through Nintendo’s Nintendo Today! mobile app and the company’s official social media channels. Producer Shigeru Miyamoto issued a personal note that attributes the new date to the production team’s progress.
“This is Miyamoto. I would like to let you know that the worldwide theatrical release date for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda has been moved up to April 30, 2027, from May 7. The team is working hard to deliver the film to everyone as soon as possible. There’s less than a year to go until release, so thank you for waiting.”
Second change to the Zelda movie schedule
This is the second adjustment to the film’s release window. Nintendo first announced the live-action Zelda project in November 2023, with an initial theatrical date of March 2027. The studio delayed the film for production reasons in June last year, moving the launch to May 7, 2027. The new April 30 date moves the release forward by one week from that delayed window.
The earlier release reverses the direction of the film’s previous schedule changes. Miyamoto’s statement frames the move as a result of the production team’s pace of work. The new date now sits inside a one-year runway to launch.
What we know about the live-action Zelda movie
Nintendo has shared limited public details about the project since its 2023 reveal. The company has confirmed the film is live-action. That separates it from Nintendo’s earlier collaboration with Illumination on the animated Super Mario Bros. films. Miyamoto is attached as a producer.
Casting choices and trailer footage have not been released publicly. The new April 30, 2027 release places the project inside a one-year window. That is a first since Nintendo confirmed the film in November 2023. Studio marketing campaigns for major releases typically begin six to nine months before launch.
The April 30, 2027 launch applies worldwide. Nintendo’s recent pattern with film releases has been simultaneous international rollout. Miyamoto’s announcement specifies a single worldwide date for the Zelda movie, with no separate regional windows mentioned. The Super Mario Bros. Movie followed the same approach in 2023, opening in most major markets within the same week.
The film will be Nintendo’s first live-action theatrical project, following the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie made with Illumination. That release earned more than $1.3 billion at the global box office. It now sets a commercial reference point for Nintendo’s broader push into film. The Zelda movie release date sits roughly one year from launch.
