1998: The Toll Keeper Story is coming to PlayStation 5. GameChanger Studio announced the PS5 port of its narrative simulation game without confirming a release date.
The title launched on PC via Steam and Android on October 28, 2025. The PS5 announcement marks its first appearance on console, though GameChanger Studio has not provided a release window.
Playing as Dewi in 1998: The Toll Keeper Story
Players take the role of Dewi, a pregnant woman working as a toll keeper in Janapa, a fictional Southeast Asian country. The game draws from the real 1998 Asian financial crisis, a period when economic collapse and political upheaval swept across the region and upended ordinary life for millions of people.
Janapa is falling apart when the story begins. Protests have spread and prices have surged beyond what most people can afford. Trust in official authority has largely gone. Dewi works her shifts at the checkpoint, inspecting vehicles and verifying documents. She decides who passes through and who does not. The game frames her not as a hero but as a regular person, pregnant, trying to hold onto her job and stay safe as conditions grow worse around her.
The mechanics are built around a document-check format. Each shift, travelers pull up, Dewi reviews their papers and vehicle, and decides whether to let them through. The pacing is deliberately repetitive, using the routine nature of the work to build a sense of accumulating pressure rather than delivering it through dramatic events.
Small choices, heavy consequences
The central tension in 1998: The Toll Keeper Story comes from the gap between following the rules and responding to what a situation requires. A driver arrives without valid documents and asks to pass. Dewi has to decide whether to enforce procedure or take a personal risk. There is no clean outcome. Turning the driver away is one cost; letting them through is another.
GameChanger Studio frames survival and motherhood as the two main threads running through every one of these decisions. The game does not rely on dramatic confrontations to carry its weight. It keeps the player at the checkpoint, shift after shift, where each individual judgment accumulates. The studio describes the core loop as small decisions with heavy consequences.
90s visual style and the PS5 version
1998: The Toll Keeper Story uses a 90s-inspired visual design combining dot textures with an old-paper aesthetic. The result is a worn, period-appropriate look that fits the setting and tone of the story.
GameChanger Studio has not said whether the PS5 version will differ from the PC and Android releases. No release date has been set for the console port.
